Modest, aesthetic and sometimes exquisitely crafted monuments to the countryside are sinking under the weight of the suburbanisation and gentrification of the countryside that we talk about all the time. As a result, the rural aesthetic is succumbing to anthracite plasticised fences, strong colour tones and an exaggerated ”care” for the tidiness and perfection of every corner.
The ongoing project, meaningfully titled Križev pot (The Way of the Cross), is a collection of photographs of the central Slovenian hills (Slovenske gorice), which photographer Andrej Firm has attempted to capture through the prism of the issue of rural suburbanisation described above. It is at the same time a document of the current state of the landscape and a flat ethnographic expedition curated by Simon Žlahtič.
